Domestic Duties
A Guide to help Visually Impaired People By Anne Sunman In the aftermath of losing my sight I have to admit that there were times when I thought, "At least I will get out of some of the domestic duties". However such thoughts soon developed into frustrations and numerous other emotions. How was I going to tackle things? The first skill I had to learn was PATIENCE. I'm still learning but hope I am better than I was.
Household Dutiese.g. Vacuuming and dusting Bed making and changing Kitchen cleanliness Bathrooms All can be achieved with initial sighted guidance and practice. A clear routine is needed to ensure no areas are missed and the other sense of touch is vital. General family tidiness is, of course, essential to assist and also so that you don't fall over anything.
Reading the MailMuch of our mail can be received in either Braille or on tape, e.g.: Bank statements, utility bills, credit or charge card accounts council correspondence, Employment and Social Services mail. If you have a personal computer mail can be sent and received via e-mail.
Payments (In or Out)Direct through a bank account or at the Post Office Payment of accounts and bills can be done by telephone, computers, by cheque and in person.
ShoppingEnsure assistance is given by shop and store. This should even be considered if you are with a sighted companion. Try to take a shopping list with you to hand to the shop assistant Learn to ask for the specific brand names or products you prefer. Ring and Ride services may be available Check if your supermarket will Braille label products Computer Interlink systems may be used at various stores and home deliveries made Mail Order may be useful for a huge variety of products
