SociaLites visit Silksworth

BlindVoice UK’s social group visited Sunderland’s ski centre on Wednesday 2 December for an afternoon on the piste. The adventurous socialites took to the slopes in what was for many their first experience of skiing. After changing into warm clothes and struggling into ski boots and skis, the group was divided into two; those who had skied before were allowed to venture further up the slopes whilst beginners were given a lesson lower down. In a one hour session participants were given the opportunity to try the basics of skiing, including how to stop in the ‘plough’ position, and the hardest part, climbing back up the slope whilst wearing skis. Slightly more experienced skiers also tried zig-zagging across the slopes and were allowed to have a go on the ski lift as they had further to climb.

The socialites were accompanied on the day by a group of 5 volunteers who between them assisted skiers up the slopes and were there to take photos of the many smooth skiing descents and the occasional fall.

After the event the group trudged to a nearby pub for some well earned refreshments and much discussion about the day’s experiences. Skiing novice, David Eagle, had this to say “It was fantastic to be given the opportunity to try skiing. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would like to thank the instructors at Sunderland ski centre for their assistance on the day”. 21 year old Mellisa Robson added “It was a really fun day out; I can’t wait for our next event”.
