Quadventure

A group of 12 Socialites visited Quad Venture in North Yorkshire to experience off-road driving. Divided into two cars of 6, the group took it in turns to drive a LandRover around the 50 Acres site travelling up and down slopes of up to 45 degree angles and being tilted up to 45 degrees to either side. This thrilling journey was conducted under the guidance of a trained instructor who gave each new driver a brief driving lesson before allowing them to set off on the track.

Although the vehicles didn’t get out of second gear, the many undulations and surface variations made for an exciting and challenging journey. In one car, volunteer Ben could be heard making encouraging remarks such as ‘we’re not going down there are we?’ followed by ‘oh, please no, not that way’. Meanwhile, in the other car, sighted guide Paul was ‘persuaded’ to drive whilst wearing a blindfold. Afterwards he said ‘I was TOLD by my wife Judith that I HAD to wear a blindfold, but it turned out to be more exciting than driving without a blindfold’.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Landrover’s is that in some places they effectively drove themselves. With the engine ‘ticking over’ the 4 by 4 required little, if not no, acceleration to propel itself forward, however this didn’t stop some members ‘putting their foot down’ to see what happened. For some it was their first time behind a wheel, and judging by the positive reactions afterwards, it won’t be there last.
