George Glass Celebrates his 80th Birthday

George Glass founder member and Chairman of BlindVoice UK (formerly Stockton Blind People’s Voice) celebrates his 80th Birthday this month.

BlindVoice UK started in May 1997 with a meeting of like-minded blind and visually impaired people whose purpose was to identify and challenge situations where access, services and opportunities for blind and visually impaired people were considered to be inadequate.

Following funding by Big Lottery in 2004 the charity opened its first office in Yarm Road. From humble beginnings BlindVoice UK now has a suite of offices including an IT training room where blind people are taught how to use a computer. George has also reached his goal in IT by completing ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence). A huge achievement!

George is extremely proud of the development of BlindVoice and at one point he described it as “being tied to the front of a runaway train” the organisation was developing so quickly.

Through BlindVoice, when the group were awarded the Queen’s Award for Volunteers, George and a group of members travelled to St. James Palace in London where he chatted with the Queen. A truly memorable occasion for all.
