Unsung heroes in the community have been honoured for their inspiring achievements which have changed and even saved lives.
The invaluable efforts of both individuals and groups received richly deserved recognition at an awards ceremony.
Their drive, dedication and compassion came under the spotlight at the Catalyst Annual Achievement Awards.
The awards, honouring people in the community and voluntary sector in the Stockton area, were held at the Wynyard Rooms at Wynyard Park.
They recognised people and organisations and individuals, who are based in, live or work in Stockton, for exceptional contribution to local life.
Those nominated in the nine categories included larger charities alongside smaller groups and individuals.
The Outstanding Achievement Award went to George Glass, of BlindVoice UK.
The story of BlindVoice UK and its development into the organisation it is today centres around the people at the heart of the organisation. Perhaps the key to the organisation’s success is Chairman and founder George Glass.
George’s life experiences and his exclusion has laid down the ethos of the organisation as it continues to fight for the rights of blind people with the aim of making lasting change, inclusion and access to accessible information that is provided across the UK with the charity’s transcription service.
George, who is 79 and lives in Stockton, has been a tireless campaigner for the rights of blind and visually impaired people.
Having himself encountered exclusion, barriers and frustrations, he has worked towards achieving lasting change and inclusion.
“I used to find there was such a lot of unfairness to blind people.
“Things are definitely better now. There is much more fairness.”
