Trustees - Jean Ward

Jean Ward was born in 1958 and has lived in the Stockton area most of her life. She started attending BlindVoice UK meetings when her son Phillip lost his sight 8 years ago. Now, almost 20, her son is at university and more independent leaving Jean more time to become involved with the group as a trustee. Jean is learning to read and write Braille on the Braille for the Sighted course taught by Linda Oliver.

Jean says

"Over the years BlindVoice UK have helped me to cope both emotionally and practically with Phill's sight loss.

A few examples of the practical help are:

•  Phill's college work has been Brailled on the equipment at BlindVoice UK a mammoth task.

•  I found out about Exercise on Prescription at a Showcase Sensory Loss open day, held every year in partnership with Stockton Borough Libraries and now all the family are now members of the local gym.

•  Phillip has enjoyed many audio described performances at Darlington Civic Theatre with both friends and family. Campaigning by BlindVoice UK has made this happen

•  A cookery course ran by Adult Education has given Phillip more confidence in the kitchen and me a bigger waistline his recipes are brailled weekly and sent to him in time for the next lesson.

•  The group has provided lots of handy hints and tips for easier everyday living.

Emotionally the support and encouragement I have found from all the happy inspirational people at SPBV has helped me to stay positive about Phillip's sight loss and I am looking forward to spending more time with my friends at BlindVoice UK as trustee.

Phillip is now in his first year at Newcastle University a credit to himself and his family
